In April of 2009 the BC Government announced a commitment of $46.3 million for Emergency Department expansion, additional treatment rooms, and the development a new Renal Dialysis Centre at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH). The Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation recognized the importance of these invaluable projects and pledged $4.54 million towards their success. You can help!

ER Expansion overview

• NRGH was built in 1963; its Emergency Room was designed to accommodate 6,000 visits per year. In 1991 improvements anticipated 15,000 patients annually…today, 48,000 people from across the Central Vancouver Island region open the ER door each year. From Ladysmith to Bowser, and all points in between, visitors utilize the Emergency Room at NRGH.
• NRGH has the busiest ER on Vancouver Island! It is estimated that 63,000 people in-need will open the door to the ER in 2020, 100,000 by 2025. As a result, the Foundation is committed to raising $4 million for the purchase of vital equipment for the expansion.
• The new ER will cost a total of $36.9 million and take 3 to 4 years to complete so the time to grow is now.

• 36 dedicated stretcher bays
• Dedicated x-ray room
• 5 isolation rooms
• Decontamination space
• 2 trauma bays with a total of 8-patient-capacity if needed
• Natural light in all patient care and staff areas for those working night shifts
• Two entrances, two exits - to facilitate patient flow and decrease congestion
