Greg Scott, Chair
Greg is a Branch Manager for the Coastal Community Credit Union. He grew up in Nanaimo and is committed to supporting NRGH as it builds healthier communities. Greg serves on the Board of Nanaimo-Ladysmith Schools Foundation, Runners of Compassion and is on a committee for the Downtown Nanaimo Improvement Association. He joined the Run for Life Committee in 2009 and continued as Chair and Co-Chair in 2011-2015. Greg has an unwavering connection to the Community and joined the Foundation Board because it “positively impacts all individuals who utilize the healthcare system on Central Vancouver Island”. Besides bringing energy, focus and passion to his role on the Foundation Board, his proactive approach is a valuable asset to the Foundation!
Vern Slaney, Vice Chair
Vern joined the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation Board of Directors in October 2014. His shared vision for the delivery of healthcare and his belief in the Foundation’s core values make him an ideal partner for success. He has served on the Board of Directors for a number of organizations including Vancouver Island Health Authority, Lion’s Gate Hospital Foundation and the BC Press Council and is currently serving on the Royal Roads University Board of Governors and the BC Automobile Association (BCAA) Board.
Vern worked for Wilkinson Steel & Metals in Vancouver for 31 years; his last eight years as President. Following his retirement Vern offers his expertise to small and medium sized firms as an interim Senior Manager and Consultant with a focus on succession planning, strategy planning, risk management, and financial reporting. He is also a valued authority on HR, governance, and team building. Vern has lived in Parksville since 2003 and enjoys travel, cooking, and the occasional round of golf. Vern and his wife Rosemary have four children and six grandchildren.
Moira Jenkins, Treasurer
Moira brings a wealth of financial and community leadership experience to the Foundation. Moira has recently retired after 44 years with RBC, and past 15 years leading the Commercial Financial services team for Vancouver Island North. Moira is busy in her retirement serving on the boards of the Nanaimo Port Authority, the Nanaimo & District Museum, as well as Treasurer for the Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation. Moira has resided in Nanaimo since 1996 with her husband David, and raised their three children who all attended Vancouver Island University and two doing post degree work.
Philip Birrer , Secretary
Philip was elected to the Board of Directors in October 2015. His motivating energy has been a welcomed addition to the Foundation. Philip was born in Switzerland, but raised in Campbell River. He moved to Nanaimo to attend VIU. After earning his Bachelor of Business degree Philip pursued a career in Accounting; obtaining his designation, he is a founding partner of Birrer Sangret LLP. Philip joined the Foundation’s Board after participating in several events that supported healthcare on the Island, and therefore the Foundation; including his role on the founding organizing committees for the Dinner of Lights and Ride for Life. He has also volunteered for the Mid-Island Velo Association, the Nanaimo Velodrome Association, and the Businesses for a Better Nanaimo. Philip enjoys the networking aspect of fundraising, as well as the strategic planning possible with a Governance Board. Yet, when he boils it down to his inspiration Philip simply says, “I want to make progressive equipment possible for everyone”.
Laurie Crossan, Director
Laurie is a Partner with Mont & Walker in Nanaimo. She received her law degree from U of Victoria and was called to the Bar in 1982; she has practiced law in Nanaimo ever since. Laurie has also taught business law at Vancouver Island University (formerly Malaspina University-College). She has previously sat on the boards of the Nanaimo Family Life Association, Theatre One and the Nanaimo Riptides Swim Association. Laurie lives in Nanaimo with her partner Paul Sedola.
Heather Popple, Director
Heather joined the Foundation’s Board of Directors in October 2015. A Queens University educated Botanist, Heather specialized in orchids. Thereafter, she engaged in a purpose-driven career at OMERS (Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System – a pension fund) ensuring pension contributions and counselling individuals as they neared retirement. Originally from Ontario, Heather and her family have lived in various locales including a lengthy span in Romania. Heather has also spent her lifetime sharing her talent and vision with not-for-profit organizations that are meaningful to her. She has taught power skating, volunteered in hospitals (notably on the volunteer Board at Sunnybrook Health Science Centre in Toronto which included serving as head of the Emergency Department Volunteers), and in numerous positions in elementary and secondary schools. After moving to BC Heather served extensively on volunteer Boards. Including Fairwinds Community Association, PROBUS (Professional and Business), and the Canadian Federation of University Women. Thanks to her plethora of experience, Heather is an exceptional addition to the Board of Directors.
Douglas Johnston, Director
Doug Johnston arrived in Nanaimo in his teens, and graduated from NDSS in 1968. He received his CGA designation in 1976 and became a partner at Barclay Tarr Walters & Company in 1977, before buying the business in 1990. Thereafter, it became Johnston, Johnston & Associates. More recently Doug’s expertise has focused on estate planning and facilitating the buying and selling of businesses. Doug joined the Foundation’s Board of Directors in October 2015 with the interest of offering his experience to a “meaningful purpose” that allows him to “stay connected to the community” as he moves towards his professional “succession plan”. In addition, his two children and four grandchildren were born at NRGH and his daughter is also a physiotherapist at the hospital. Doug has extensive volunteer Board experience, including the Nanaimo 2005 BC Disability Games; the United Way of Nanaimo; the Nanaimo Arena Society; the Nanaimo Centennial Recreation Society; the Heritage Revitalization Program for the Fitzwilliam Street revitalization; the Upper Vancouver Island Chapter of the Certified General Accountants Association of BC. Doug lives in Nanaimo with his wife Nancy.
Leslie Sundby, Director
Leslie Sundby is currently the Chair of the BSN at Vancouver Island University. Originally from Oakville Ontario, she has lived in Nanaimo since 1998. Leslie received her BSN from the University of Victoria and her Masters in Nursing from University of Alberta. Leslie is also on the Board of Directors of Two Worlds, Nepal – working with partners to operationalize and evaluate the strategic plan for palliative care in Nepal. She has done volunteer nursing in both Guatemala and Nepal. Leslie has two children, Aly and Ben.

Toni Wheeler, Director
Toni is a dedicated health care professional with over 25 years experience working as a Registered Nurse in acute care and seniors health settings . Further to this, as a lifelong learner, she earned an MBA in 2012. She has served on several boards in Saskatchewan and is a committed community volunteer. Toni relocated to Nanaimo in 2015 and is very excited she has joined the Hospital Foundation Board.
