The New Emergency Wing at NRGH is Celebrated

It was a perfect day to show off the new Emergency Wing at NRGH. The sunny skies filled the new space with sunlight, demonstrating the full effect of the five courtyards often referred to as “light wells”. The Honourable Dr. Margaret MacDiarmid presided over the “banner cutting” event, in her first official responsibility as the new Health Minister. Christine McAuley, Chair of the Hospital Foundation’s Board of Directors, expressed her gratitude to donors whose generosity has helped raise $3 million of the $4 million the Foundation has pledged for the purchase of lifesaving Emergency Department equipment. She also gave special thanks to the Department staff that have given time, shared knowledge, and shown passion for their work. We have a very special Team.
The new Wing will nearly triple the size of Emergency Services and adds 11 beds to Nanaimo Mental Health & Addiction Services. Previously, mental health & addiction patients were treated amid the general population of those seeking emergency care. This meant very little privacy during difficult times. The new Emergency Wing pays particular attention to infection control with glass doors on patient rooms and hands-free sinks to stop the spread of germs. In fact, the sinks were designed by the ED Team during design discussions that always included staff. Every detail was considered throughout the LEED Gold™ construction.
The doors to the new Emergency Wing will open to patients on October 1st. When you visit, take notice of the new equipment, beds, and children’s area that has been purchased by you, our donors.
