Nanaimo power lifter Rhonda Heaslip “Raised the Bar” by gathering $3,600 in pledges for the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation’s effort to purchase needed equipment for the New Emergency Department currently under construction at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH). Using her bid at the World Power Lifting Championships in September, Rhonda was able to make a significant contribution to a good cause and deliver a record-breaking performance. Rhonda won Bronze in squat, a Silver in bench-press, and a Gold in dead-lift; overall she was awarded the Silver Medal in her class, second only to a Russian competitor. Each one of these lifts broke a Canadian and Commonwealth record.
While Rhonda did the hard work it was with thanks to her supporters: Kim Smyth, Nanaimo Athletics Club, photographer Lance Sullivan, and Aloyd Fitness. As a Realtor the power lifter was also supported by her fellow Realtors at several different brokerages, as well as by the Vancouver Island Real Estate Board (VIREB). Rhonda has long been motivated to help NRGH after the difficult delivery of her daughter in 1992 and she is “proud” to be able to make a difference now. Rhonda is already planning her Canadian bid in April, and the World’s in Texas in October 2012.
