If you have been to the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH) you have likely encountered a red-coated volunteer from the Nanaimo Auxiliary to NRGH. More than 260 Auxiliary members donate their time volunteering around the hospital and at their Thrift Store in Northridge Centre. From delivering books, to staffing the gift store; from getting tea for chemotherapy patients, to providing help at the Information Desk, each member goes beyond expectation to be of service to NRGH visitors. The members are also outstanding fundraisers. At their annual general meeting (AGM) on March 25th the Auxiliary presented $250,000 to Maeve O’Byrne, President of the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation. This gift has been directed towards equipment purchases for the Foundation’s latest campaign to raise $1.5 million for the completion of two operating rooms at NRGH. The Auxiliary also donated to several hospital departments including Dufferin Place, which received $25,000 to renovate inaccessible residential outdoor spaces. In total, the Nanaimo Auxiliary to NRGH gave more than $320,000 for the betterment of the community hospital.
