When Michael Seib, owner of Island CPAP in Courtenay, was consulted about providing respiratory equipment to a patient with breathing difficulties he realized that the NRGH Respiratory Therapy Services was without a single BI PAP unit. A BI PAP is a bedside machine that helps push air into the lungs of a patient having ongoing breathing issues. The machine pushes ordinary air through a face mask and into the lungs; it then keeps the lungs open so more air can enter. This creates a consistent flow of air to the patient. It is ideal for patients who are having trouble breathing, but are unable to tolerate the more common C PAP machines. Mr. Seib went beyond expectation when he generously donated two BI PAP machines to NRGH, at a cost of nearly $13,000. It is thanks to individuals like Mr. Seib who are willing to step forward to advance healthcare close to home by giving Island Health professionals tools for success. Our thanks to Mr. Seib and Island CPAP!
