Left to Right: Sushi Eh manager Johnson Chen and Helen Liu, Sushi Eh co-owner, celebrate the restaurant’s grand re-opening with a donation to the Hospital Foundation to say “thank you” to their new community.
Helen Liu, her husband, and two children recently moved to Nanaimo from Beijing, China to acquire and operate the Sushi Eh restaurant on Hammond Bay Road. While the couple was busily renovating the restaurant Helen’s husband was suddenly faced with a medical crisis and underwent surgery at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH). Helen was “emotionally touched” by the respect she, her children, and husband received during such a difficult time. The care that was given inspired the Sushi Eh owners to make a difference in their new community.
When Sushi Eh celebrated its grand re-opening on April 6, 2014 Helen and her family decided to donate the entire day’s earnings to NRGH in honour of the care they received from medical professionals. As a result, Sushi Eh presented $1,472.85 to Brenda Rositano, of the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation. The couple makes it clear that this is a gift from new immigrants as a way to express gratitude for medical care, but also to say “thank you” to all of the people who have helped in the transition to a new home. Furthermore, it is a way to show appreciation to Nanaimo for the warm welcome given to the family.
