Dufferin Place Renovations
Thank you for helping us to make these renovations possible!
Dufferin Place is a wonderful home-away-from-home for residents in “transitional” or “extended care”. The staff’s dedication to exemplary care is evident, and the Foundation is proud to be a part of the facility’s commitment to healthcare excellence.
Dufferin Place is a 150 bed extended care facility built in 1987 with limited recreational space wherein residents could spend time doing crafts, gardening, or visiting with family and friends. Since its beginning Dufferin Place has evolved, and recreation has increased to become an important aspect of health and wellness.
Making the project a reality
In 2002 a formal proposal sought funding to improve activity areas for residents by 2005/06. The Vancouver Island Health Authority thereafter partnered with the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation in order to help Dufferin Place realize its goals. Due to economic considerations and increased construction costs, Dufferin Place waited patiently for its renewal.
In 2009 the equal partnership between the Health Authority and the Foundation provided $300,000 in funding to complete two private “nooks” for reading, visiting, or playing a quite game of cards; an interactive kitchen where residents and staff participate in smaller-group activities; and a terrace garden to enjoy the sun and do some gardening. The Dufferin team was clear about its vision and the project was accomplished seamlessly. The modern colours and comfortable furniture illustrate the sense of home and family that is important to residents and staff.
The Foundation’s contributions are possible due to the resolute determination of donors who see the importance of a resident’s experience at Dufferin Place. On December 2, 2009 residents, family, staff, and representatives from the Vancouver Island Health Authority and the Foundation joined to celebrate Dufferin Place’s “New Beginning”. Foundation President, Maeve O’Byrne, recognized the facility’s staff as “instrumental in creating such a special Care Facility and realizing their goals.” Adding, “Dufferin Place is home to residents and creating a welcoming environment is essential.” The renovations are possible due to the generous donations of our benefactors. Thank you!
