Palliative Care Unit

The  renovation is now complete! Thank you to all supporters who helped to raise nearly $2 million towards this project.

What is Palliative Care?

The Palliative Care Program at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH) is comprised of a specially trained team of physicians, nurses, spiritual advisors, and volunteers. The team assists terminally ill patients and their loved ones deal with the physical, psychological, and spiritual issues associated with death and bereavement.

History of Palliative Care at NRGH

The unit relocated to its present location on the hospital’s ground floor in 2005, expanding from six beds to twelve. The renovated unit permits privacy and dignity in a calm, peaceful space. Some of the features include: more private rooms; better air circulation; a large, modern kitchen, so families can make meals and snacks; and specialized equipment to enhance patient comfort. Home-like furnishings soften the stark clinical atmosphere. The renovations were completed in November 2008. Approximately 1,000 palliative care patients and their families yearly will benefit from upgraded facilities.

Why do we need Palliative Care?

The need for palliative care services continues to grow. People of all ages, from all walks of life, seek a tranquil place where they can share quality time, at life’s end, with those who are important to them.

Thank you for your help!

Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation was able to fund $1,920,000 of this $2.8 Million dollar project made possible in part through generous gifts. Many central Vancouver Island families will have the benefit of enhanced patient comfort while struggling through a difficult experience because donors chose to make a difference in their community healthcare.
