The Newmans were not the only big winners in the Lotto for Life Final Draw; second place winners were Verna and Tom MacDuff of Ladysmith. The couple was elated to receive a call that they had won a 2013 Buick Verano. Verna noted, “Without a hospital in Ladysmith, NRGH is our hospital; we use it and we support it.” Currently the couple drives a 2005 Toyota, but looked sporting behind the wheel of the midnight blue Verano when they drove it off the lot.
All proceeds from Lotto for Life 2013 will help purchase equipment in the new Emergency Department at NRGH. While the new space opened in October 2012, the Foundation continues to raise $4 million for equipment that is still needed. Lotto for Life organizer, Brenda Rositano, said “This is our 20th Lotto for Life and the support and goodwill we receive from businesses that host our Early Bird and Final Draws, sell tickets, and enhance our prize list makes this event possible. While the Foundation does purchase the prizes we award, sponsors match or contribute in many ways that make a huge difference. Still, our biggest ‘thank you’ goes to every individual who purchases a ticket. More often than not, they do it because they believe so strongly in this cause. We are very grateful for their help and look forward to 2014.” For a full list of winners visit www.nanaimohospitalfoundation.com/lotto
