Chix with Stix, a decorated Nanaimo Dragon Boat team, recently delivered $2,500 to the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation towards the purchase of breast cancer detection and treatment equipment for Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH). Since 2006 the team has contributed more than $5,250 towards healthcare thanks to the dedicated support of their sponsors, including Harris Auto, Dr. John Olesen & Dr. Maria Furlong, and MKD McGregor Krastel Dougan to name but a few. Sponsor support allows the team to concentrate on competition.
Chix with Stix has been paddling as a team for five years and sailed away as “Platinum B” winners at the 2010 Save-on-Foods Dragon Boat Festival in July and were also awarded the Lorri Marriott Memorial Trophy for top local women’s team at the same event; the second time the team has been awarded this honour. Team representative Janet Povey explains, they “do it for the love of paddling,” but more importantly, “at the end of the day the common goal is diagnosing and defeating breast cancer."
