It was an emotional moment when the Chix with Stix Dragon Boat team delivered their $3,135 donation to the oncology nurses in the Cancer Clinic at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH). Nurses, Kari O’Hara and Robyn Dunstan, were overwhelmed with sincere appreciation for the hard work of the team and the generosity of its sponsors because it would provide education funding otherwise unavailable.
Chix with Stix specifically focused on the Cancer Clinic’s Education Fund as the beneficiary. As a result, O’Hara and Dunstan were able to attend the National Oncology Conference in Quebec City in late October. Because the NRGH Cancer Clinic is relatively small compared to larger hospitals, there are limited opportunities for its nurses to attend national conferences to compare care practices, learn of new developments, and network with their peers. Without this donation the nurses would not have been able to attend.
The Chix with Stix Dragon Boat team took home silver in the “Platinum ‘A’ Women’s Division” at the 2014 Save On Foods Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival in July; they were also the top Nanaimo Women’s team. Chix with Stix fundraise through paddler dues, their tiller Doug Drysdale’s fee donation, and also through the strong support of their sponsors. Jim Tyson, of Investors Group, is a Chix with Stix Platinum Level sponsor and was happy to support the team because they contribute to NRGH. Tyson explained his motivation, “the hospital is where it starts and where it ends. We have all been touched by cancer.”
