Dick and Eveline O’Rourke are the type of people who take pride in their community and step forward to help when they see the need. When they discovered the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation’s lottery almost a decade ago, they were happy to participate because they believed in the cause. Eveline explained, “The Hospital is such an important part of the community and we cannot say enough about the Foundation. We are so happy to see projects progress. It’s an exciting time.”
Dick is a retired, 4th generation Canadian National Railway employee; a highlight of his job includes serving as Commissioner of the CN Pavilion at Expo ’86. Eveline enjoyed a rewarding career teaching music and then working as a nurse in hospital settings. They relocated to Nanaimo more than 25 years ago, after searching Vancouver Island for a place to call home. Dick is also an accomplished woodworker with a legacy of hand built furniture to prove his skill. When the O’Rourkes received the phone call that their Lotto for Life ticket won the $100,000 Grand Prize they were stunned, but soon began to dream of ways to share their good fortune with, as Dick calls them, “our large family”; they proudly boast six children and twelve grandchildren.
The Final Draw on March 18th awarded eighty prizes to lucky ticket holders including Peggy Peppard, the second place winner, who drove home a new 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. Coincidentally, Peggy is a renal nurse in the Home Dialysis Unit in Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH) and spends her working day helping kidney patients live healthy, active lives. Brenda Rositano, of the Hospital Foundation, was joined by Tom Harris of Harris Auto Group to present the keys to Peggy. Brenda commented, “It is thanks to our volunteers, ticket outlets, and prize sponsors who offer discounted prices that Lotto for Life has been successful for twenty-three years. However, it is only possible because of each person who goes out and purchases a ticket in support of the hospital, thank you.” To see a full list of all 80 prize winners visit www.nanaimohospitalfoundation.com/lotto
