In June Sheri and Mike Shanahan decided to honour their youngest daughter Jesse by inspiring family and friends with their story. Jesse was born April 16th, 2013 at nine weeks premature. She weighed only 2lbs 12 ounces and spent her first 12 days at Victoria General’s NICU, and once doctors felt she was ready Jesse was transferred to the NRGH NICU for the next 27 days.
Jesse, 5 weeks old and four days old, was discharged from hospital on Friday, May 24th after passing every necessary test. The following week, on May 31st, Jesse unexpectedly passed away. Sheri and Mike resolved to turn their grief into something positive; their friends and family – and soon even strangers rallied around the family in support. As a result, the couple, together with their older daughter Marlee announced the success of their efforts by presenting Jesse’s Gift to NRGH. The young family gives credit to the multitude of supporters who shared their dream of establishing Jesse’s Gift for the benefit of babies and their families staying at the NRGH NICU.
