Malaika Macoun delivers donation to Kristy Petovello, Child Life Specialist at NRGH
Malaika Macoun was named for the Swahili word for “angel” in honour of her family’s special connection to Kenya where Swahili is one of the official languages. When Malaika began planning her 5th birthday party she carefully crafted her own invitations complete with glitter and a special request. She asked her five guests to bring a donation, rather than a gift, so she could contribute to the care of sick children visiting Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. Proving the significance of her name, Malaika said she “just wanted to help people”. As a result, the young benefactor contributed $70.00 to the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation, to be directed towards the Paediatric Unit at NRGH.
