Mid Island Co-op has a strong affiliation with the communities its members live in. When the organization heard that the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation was in need of funds to help equip the newly opened Emergency Department at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH) they were quick to help with a donation of $8,000 for the purchase of lifesaving medical equipment. Darlene Thorburn, Mid Island Co-op President, explained that her group “Allocate funds in their budget each year for community projects,” adding that support of NRGH was decided “because our members live in this community.”
The new Emergency Department at NRGH is the busiest on Vancouver Island and saw more than 55,000 visitors last year. The new Department, opened to patients on October 1st, and is nearly triple the size of the old space. Stu Seifert, Chair of the Funds Allocation Committee (FAC), added, “It is good to know that our members, when needing emergency care, will have the best doctors and equipment in the new facility.” To view pictures of the new Emergency Department visit www.nanaimohospitalfoundation.com/er
