The Rotary Club of Nanaimo is no stranger to hospital fundraising, in fact in 1927 the Club helped to fund the construction of the “Nanaimo General Hospital” on Kennedy Street when the first Nanaimo Hospital was in need of replacement. Since that time Club Members have held dozens of fundraisers for the purchase of Hospital equipment for the Kennedy Street location, and at the “new” NRGH on Dufferin Crescent. This has enabled Central Vancouver Islanders the opportunity to access essential medical treatment closer to home. Since the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation began its first Capital Campaign more than 20 years ago, the Rotary Club of Nanaimo has given over $125,000 for equipment.
The Rotary Club of Nanaimo raised this $50,000 donation thanks to last year’s success at their biannual Book Sale at Nanaimo North Town Centre. The Club sells thousands of donated secondhand books for $1 to $3 and all proceeds are given to charity. Rotarian, and Book Sale co-organizer, Bruce Gordon, is quick to mention “it is with thanks to Nanaimo North Town Centre, which donates the space for the Sale, and the public’s participation in donating and buying books that we are able contribute to valuable projects that help our community.” The group’s endeavor demonstrates the Rotarian principle of “service before self”. The public can donate books to drop boxes located in Nanaimo North Town Centre. The next Book Sale will be held from May 3rd to May 12th at Nanaimo North Town Centre and the public is invited to come and browse the stacks for a good read, and a good cause.
