Nelson’s Co-Chair, Greg Scott, said “Every year we are so impressed by the determination of the runners and their family and friends who support this grassroots fundraiser. This year there were more teams and more runners out on the course than ever before. It was fantastic. It really makes it all worthwhile.”
The prize for “top pledge-earner” went to Mai Pham for the second year in a row. Pham has participated as a volunteer and runner for two years and likes to run because the money is donated to the local hospital. Her family is full of strong supporters, and Pham was also inspired to raise funds in a creative way this year. Her friend “DJ 2E”, who works at Spice Lounge, suggested Pham ask club owners to donate the cover charge at a pre-event fundraiser the night before the Run for Life. Spice Lounge was happy to participate and contributed $560 to Pham’s total of $2,065. The most successful team was ‘Board for Life”, made up of the Foundation’s Board of Directors who collected more than $6,000. Heath Law turned out the largest teams, with 18 participants running the course and raising the third largest team amount.
Pledges raised during the 2013 event have been directed towards the purchase of equipment for the new Emergency Department at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH). The new space opened to the public in October 2012 and the Hospital Foundation is on the homestretch to its $4 million goal to outfit the Department with needed equipment.
