When the judges’ panel read Barb Parker’s submission detailing “Jingle Pot Road, Bathtub Races, and Nanaimo Bars” they knew they had found something special in the city of Nanaimo. Ms. Parker, a paddler on the Wave Babes Dragon Boat Team, was born and raised in Nanaimo and her charity of choice was an easy decision. She and her close knit teammates have spent years raising funds for breast cancer diagnostic and treatment equipment for the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH), helping Vancouver Island women seek care locally. Thanks to Ms. Parker’s recommendation, Shaw’s Greg Scollon, VP of Operations for Vancouver and Vancouver Island, presented $5,000 to Maeve O’Byrne of the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation. These funds will continue the fight against breast cancer at NRGH. The winning video featuring a team of Shaw technicians was also from the Island, based out of Campbell River, and Shaw’s $5,000 donation went to the local Hospital Foundation.
