Perinatal & Pediatric Unit Manager, Shelley McKenzie said, “I am really impressed that he requested ‘no presents’ in order that he could help NICU. There are lots of things we need for the babies that Simon’s donation will help us buy.” For young Simon, he was motivated to fundraise simply because he “wanted to buy medicine for the babies, so they wouldn’t be sick anymore.”
Shelley McKenzie notes that NRGH’s 9-bed NICU is a level-two specialized Unit that takes care of infants “who require complex care.” In comparison, BC Children’s Hospital is a level-three facility. As Neonatal Intensive Care is provincially coordinated NRGH cares for children from across Vancouver Island, and often from other areas in BC; on average, it runs at 80% occupancy. For young Simon, he can rest assured that his generosity will help many newborns and their parents during a stressful time.
