“As a grandfather, it’s difficult to comprehend the challenges some of our youngest community members and their families are faced with,” said Ray Lawson, TELUS General Manager for Vancouver Island. “We wanted to help create a place where children spending time at the emergency ward could laugh, play and perhaps take their mind off the reasons why they’re visiting the hospital. On behalf of TELUS, I want to thank all of our customers for their support which made this community gift possible.”
Maeve O’Byrne, President of the Hospital Foundation, said “We are delighted that TELUS chose to support such a necessary cause. In fact, TELUS’s donation is one of the largest gifts the new Department has received and marks the end of our $4 million pledge for lifesaving equipment. The Foundation is extremely grateful for TELUS’s focus on children’s healthcare and we know the new Child’s Play Area will help comfort kids visiting the Emergency Department.”
The new Department at NRGH opened in October 2012 and is nearly three times the size of the previous “ER”. More than 60,000 people on Central Vancouver Island seek emergency services at NRGH annually so the expansion was a critical addition to medical care in the area.
TELUS is a strong supporter of the Nanaimo community. Since 2000, TELUS, their team members, and retirees have contributed more than $530,000 and 68,000 volunteer hours to charitable organizations in Nanaimo. For more information, or to order TELUS TV, visit telus.com/tv or call 310-MYTV (6988).
